We all love our own little cozy corners of Westchester. There are so many things to do and see, places to eat, parks to visit. We love exploring the county and “finding” the kid-friendly gems! Even if you have lived here your entire life, you can still find new fun things to do all the time. It is our mom-bloggin’ duty to highlight some of those awesome places so that other moms can take advantage too! With each installment one or two new towns/cities will be highlighted to give you a glimpse into the awesomeness that is Westchester! Be sure to read all posts in our Spotlight on Westchester Series.
Longing for the big city feel without leaving Westchester? New Rochelle may be the place for you. It is the seventh largest city in New York state, which means lots of opportunities for fun! Here are a couple of great places to visit while you are there.
What To Do
Family Fun: I’d be remiss to write about New Rochelle without mentioning New Roc City. Feel like a movie? Go to New Roc. Bowling your thing? New Roc. Want to buy a new book and sip a latte? Go to Barnes and Nobles… in New Roc. Locally known as New Roc, New Rochelle Center is located at 33 Lecount Place in the heart of New Rochelle. It has undergone recent renovations and is always teaming with families, teens, and adults looking for a fun time.
Children will enjoy the Fun Fuzion arcade (ok, adults will too, I have been known to play a mean game of skee ball along side my daughters!). There are arcade games and carnival rides, plus a prize booth. What kid doesn’t love winning tickets to get those giant stuffed animals and plastic trinkets? There are snacks available for sale there as well. After you get the kids all hyped up on sugar and screen time, let them burn some energy at Sky Zone trampoline park.
New Roc also is home to an indoor mini golf course, billiards, two restaurants, and a sporting goods store. There are plenty of (paid) parking as well making New Roc a one stop location for everyone!
Outdoor Fun: If you are looking to spend some time outdoors in New Rochelle, a quick walk down North Avenue will lead you to Huguenot Park. This beauty is located in front of New Rochelle High School and houses two lakes (that you can skate and fish on), walking trails, and a friendship garden. It is very picturesque and quite often you will see photo shoots occurring in front of the lakes. However, my favorite part of Huguenot Park is the playground which is built specifically to be accessible to special needs children. It has wide access points and is safe and fun!
Where To Eat
Comfort With A Twist: I was looking for place to have my daughter’s birthday dinner. Seems like a simple thing to do, unless your kid is the pickiest person on the planet. She loves macaroni and cheese and well…that’s it. So when I heard that The Wooden Spoon had a make your own mac and cheese option, I knew I had found the right spot. The restaurant offers an amazing array of mac and cheese creations, fun burgers and classic comfort food entrees. To take it up a notch, they also serve delicious drinks including thick and creamy milk shakes. It is family friendly but also a great after work or brunch spot. Not sold yet? Have I mentioned the totchos?! You read that right – totchos, nachos made out of tater tots! Are you drooling yet? I am. They are so good! However, the best part of my dining experience at The Wooden Spoon was the crispy brussel sprouts. I dream about them now. I can write an entire blog as an ode to them. There’s bacon, Gorgonzola, cranberries, and the sprouts, all drizzled in maple syrup. Trust me, you must try them. Go!
Local Hot Spot: Leno’s Clam Bar is a local hot spot that has been in New Rochelle for years. However, many people don’t know it by its proper name and instead call it Greasy Nick’s. It is one of the great roadside eateries of lower Westchester! Greasy Nick’s is located at 755 Pelham Road and serves more than just fried seafood. They also serve up a mean burger! This is a great place to eat with your family and relax during nice weather. It does get crowded in the summer, but that’s just a testament to the great eats! Since you can sit outdoors, it is a great place to bring the kids and everyone will have something they like to eat!
