Inspiring Family Activities

family activitiesDid you know that we can inspire one another to be more active?

This year’s Sports & Fitness Industry Association’s annual Topline Participation Report revealed some interesting statistics. The percentage of Americans aged six and over that are physically inactive is at about 27.6% (this number has remained just about the same since 2012). The report also showed that 43% of these inactive people said they would be more active if they had someone to be active with. 32% said they would be more active if they could take a friend along.

That means that most people would strive to be more active if they did not have to go at it alone.

If you’re a parent who wants your child to be more active, why not do it together? Families are the most convenient way to have exercise buddies!

Here are some ways to have fun:

  • Take walks
  • Go hiking
  • Play catch (baseballs, beach balls, volleyballs, any ball will do!)
  • Shoot hoops
  • Go for a bike ride
  • Jump rope
  • Hula hoop
  • Walk the dog
  • Go to the park
  • Garden together
  • Have your child help with yardwork
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Choose the furthest parking spot from the entrance

Aim for one hour each day. There is no need to refer to these activities as exercise. Make it a fun part of everyday life, not something they have to do. It will become something they love to do, and it will help them become active people!
